Naked Juice Co. of Azusa, Calif., launched a new juice smoothie this fall that contains an unlikely ingredient—live bacteria. Some of these microbes appear capable of improving digestion, preventing diarrhea, or strengthening the immune system, studies show.
An infant formula from Nestlé is one of several such probiotic products to hit shelves recently. It contains bacteria that the company says are similar to those found in the digestive systems of breast-fed babies. Nestlé-sponsored studies suggest the formula boosts levels of key antibodies that help the immune system develop. Some experts are optimistic that probiotics may help formula-fed babies gain some of the immunity-building benefits of breastfeeding.

My Comment:
Wow! This is exiting news! All of these new products will create more public awareness of the benefits of a probiotic diet.
Unfortunately, I suspect, some of these mass-marketed products may not be the healthiest choices. Hopefully they will provide some benefits to consumers.
If you are looking for a great probiotic drink that has healthy ingredients, then Innergy Biotic is a perfect choice. It's definitely worth trying and it is easier that making your own fermented beverages.

The Doctor Says Get a CT Scan. Should You?
Researchers estimate that a third of CT scans are entirely unnecessary and might be setting the stage for higher incidence of cancer in years to come. Around 62 million scans are performed per year, compared with only 3 million in 1980.

My Comment:
A typical chest CT means around a 175-times-greater dose of radiation than a similar chest X-ray—that's like 20 sets of mammograms.
Medical technology is amazing and can be life-saving, however, we really need to weigh the risk / benefit ratio prior to blindly doing any type of medical procedure. This is especially true with children.

Too Little Milk, Exercise Hurting Kids - They're Getting Rickets?
Too little milk, sunshine and exercise: It's an anti-bone trifecta. And for some kids, shockingly, it's leading to rickets, the soft-bone scourge of the 19th century. You know the bowed legs, the weakened bones -- it all disappeared 50 years ago with the introduction of fortified milk. But it's making a comeback.
Rickets marks the worst deficiency, where bones become so soft that legs literally bow. Rickets was once thought to have been eradicated with milk fortification, but "I am now treating rickets in a way that I never treated it 20 years ago," says Tosi, who diagnoses rickets or super-low D levels in children every month at a bone clinic she runs for mostly inner-city children.
Doctors who've never seen rickets can miss it. Charlene Bullock repeatedly asked her 5-year-old's doctor why his leg was bending inward and he could no longer run with his playmates. It took a trip to Tosi's special clinic to learn Na-shun had rickets - the once energetic child had quit running because his bones ached like an old man's.
Fortunately, rickets caught early is easily cured with high-dose infusions of vitamin D and calcium, and Bullock's son quickly rebounded. "He's doing everything with that little leg."

My Comment:
Everyone needs to get tested for Vitamin D deficiency - children and adults. The correct test is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D
Optimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D values are:45-50 ng/ml (or 115-128 nmol/l)
"Your vitamin D level should NEVER be below 32 ng/ml. Any levels below 20 ng/ml are considered serious defiency states and will increase your risk of breast and prostate cancer and autoimmune diseases like MS and rheumatoid arthritis." -Dr. Mercola
I was taking cod liver oil for 2 years and then I had my Vitamin D tested. My level was 25 ng/ml. I have switched to a different cod liver oil, a high vitamin cod liver oil. During the winter I continue to take the high vitamin cod liver oil, and I also take a Vitamin D capsule too. I'm getting about 1,500 IUs of Vitamin D from the cod liver oil and another 5,000 IUs from the Vitmain D capsule.

ABC News: Vaccinations or Jail? Parents Up in Arms
Get the shots or go to jail. ABC News story - with videos.
read more digg story
My Comment:
At least the news video clearly indicates that the law in Maryland states that kids can avoid shots by means of either a religious exemption or medical exemption.
It's odd that all the news reports go on and on about how that the kids MUST get vaccinated. But, in reality, parents simply need to sign an exemption form.

Study: Kids will eat healthy school food
Bucking some common notions, a University of Minnesota study has found that school lunch sales don't decline when healthier meals are served, and that more nutritious lunches don't necessarily cost schools more to produce.

My Comment:
It's great that people are realizing that eating healthy doesn't have to cost more and it can be enjoyable.
"That doesn't mean we don't have a hot dog on our menu. We do. ... In our case it's a turkey low-fat hot dog," she said.
Too bad people still have an aversion to fat. Eating low-fat food isn't healthy, unless it's low-fat because it's a fruit or vegetable.

Clinton would boost autism funding
Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday pledged to help autistic families by boosting funding for research and education to $700 million a year. If elected, Hillary would expand research to identify the causes of autism, including potential environmental reasons.

My Comment:
Would the government ban vaccinations if Hillary finds an autism link?
On the surface, it's great to bring awareness and funding to autism, but the government's track record is less than stellar when it comes to any health related issue.

Getting the flu isn't fun. We all want to avoid it. But vaccinations and drugs are not the answer.
What's the best way to avoid the flu?
- Don't eat too much sugar - a blood sugar value of 120 reduces you immune system by 75% (yet another reason that eating fat is good for you - it helps stabilize blood sugar levels).
- Get your Vitamin D levels tested and supplement if necessary.
- Wash your hands (not with antibacterial soap)
- Eat a diet rich in friendly bacteria

Wi-Fi linked to childhood autism
A study published this week in the Australasian Journal of Clinical Environmental Medicine warns that wireless communication technology may be responsible for accelerating the rise in autism among children.

My Comment:
First of all, I couldn't read the full article because the website crashed - due to so much traffic. I guess that means a lot of people are concerned about the WiFi / Autism connection.
Do I think WiFi causes autism? Who knows? In general, I think that less is best. Whether it's less TV, less WiFi, less cell phones, less candy, less processed food. Electronic "noise" (like Wi-Fi) is probably not beneficial to our bodies.

Vaccination or Jail Time
Parents of children who go to Prince George's County (school) are to appear at a special court hearing. Their choices are stark, either have their child (children) vaccinated there and then or face imprisonment or fines. This county still had 2,300 kids who had not been vaccinated and drastic measures have been put into force to make sure they are.

My Comment:
I'm speechless.
Well, not totally speechless. Maybe this is a good time to touch on the flu shot, or should we call it the "mercury shot".
A record 130 million Americans are expected to get a flu shot this season in hopes of ducking the nasty virus, but as the needle pierces the skin more than 80% will also get a hefty and dangerous dose of mercury.

By the way...
There is no law in America that says your child has to take any vaccine whatsoever, no matter what any executive order, requirement, mandate or policy dictates, there is no situation where you can go to prison for refusing a government vaccine under the U.S. constitution and the law of the land.

Evidence Links GM Foods to Allergic Responses
Soy allergies jumped 50% in the U.K. just after GM soy was introduced. Indian farm workers exposed to Bt cotton developed moderate or severe allergic reactions.
