Deidre Currie Festival

I remember when I first saw Sally Fallon speak at the Detroit Waldorf school in 2000. I loved the message and I joined the Weston A Price Foundation. I also got involved in my local chapter, Healthy Traditions Network. In 2005, I traveled to Washington DC, to Wise Traditions, the national conference. It was a blast! Great food, great speakers and great people. It was there where I met Deidre Currie for the first time. She was hanging out with Archie Welch. Archie was a fellow member of my local Detroit chapter. Deidre was from Australia. Dee and Archie ended up tying the knot, and Dee moved to Michigan.

Last year, Dee organized an amazing Weston A Price conference right in Michigan. I saw first hand how much drive and passion that Dee had for getting this information out there. (I setup the website for the conference). It was exciting to see how her efforts changed many people's lives at the conference. In fact, my son went on an anti-GMO crusade after reading a book that we picked up from the conference. Watch the video here.

Then on January 8th, 2008, Deidre Currie was rushed to the hospital due to a medical emergency. She was pregnant with her first child. What should have been the happiest day of her life, turned tragic. Dee passed away. Despite being six weeks premature, the baby was as healthy as a full term baby, due to Dee's dedication to a healthy lifestyle.

Archie, in honor of Dee, organized the Deidre Currie Festival. All proceeds from this event will go into a fund setup for Dee's son, Jack Currie-Welch. It's going to be an amazing event.

Cows Eat Potato Chips and M&M's

Ninety percent of cows are factory farmed and are force fed corn. With the price of corn skyrocketing, farmers are looking for cheaper was to feed cattle. The Wall Street Journal produced this video that shows what cows are being fed (potato chips and M&Ms!!!!). Hopefully this will wake up some people and get them to seek out grass fed beef.

My favorite part of the video is where the cattle rancher states that he's never tasted grass fed beef. Cows are built to digest grass, not corn. I've never seen ads for the dairy industry where cows are roaming around corn fields... the ads always depict cows in green pastures.

Vaccine Refusals Fuel Jump in Measles Outbreaks

The number of measles cases in the U.S. is at its highest level since 1997, and nearly half of those involve children whose parents rejected vaccination, government health officials reported.

Worried doctors are troubled by the trend fueled by unfounded fears that vaccines may cause autism. The number of cases is still small, just 131, but that’s only for the first seven months of the year. There were only 42 cases for all of last year.

My Comment:
So, let me get this straight. Half of the people who got measels were vaccinated. Maybe we should be sounding the alarms over the fact that vaccinations do not equal immunizations. Buried in the article is the fact:

None of the 131 patients died, but 15 were hospitalized.

Fast forward 30 years. I can see the headline:
"5,000 Got a Cold Due to Lack of Vaccination, 1 Died"

Of course nobody likes to get sick, or catch a disease. But, if strive to maintain a healthy lifestyle, we are likely to be able to fight off sickness and diseases without dying. If you are very poor health and do not follow a healthy lifestyle, you could succumb to even the common cold.

PS - I'm sure will see a flury of stories like this one in the coming years. Thanks to Jenny McCarthy and her book Louder Than Words the media is paying attention to the vaccination / autism debate.

Parasites = Parents who don't vaccinate their children

parents who don't vaccinate their children are parasitesX-Files Actress on Vaccines: Ignore the Stars
By DAN CHILDS, ABC News Medical Unit, Aug. 5, 2008

Actress Amanda Peet is not the first celebrity to speak out on childhood vaccination. But her message is clearly different from that of many other stars on the subject.

And on Tuesday morning, she shared this advice with the public on ABC's "Good Morning America": the public might be better off to turn a deaf ear to celebrities when it comes to vaccines.

In in the July issue of the parenting magazine Cookie, Amanda Peet stated, "Frankly, I feel that parents who don't vaccinate their children are parasites."

My Comment:

"It seems that the media is often giving celebrities and actors more authority on this issue than they are giving the experts," Peet said. "I know it's a paradox, but that's part of why I wanted to become a spokesperson, to say to people, 'Please don't listen to me. Don't listen to actors. Go to the experts.'"

I agree with the part "Please don't listen to me". However, I disagree with "Go to the experts." Simply look at the health of the nation. We've been trusting the "experts" too long. Amanda Peet should pick up the book: Trust Us We're Experts: How Industry Manipulates Science and Gambles with Your Future

Congress Bans Phthalates from Toys and Child Care Products

Before last year's fiasco with lead in toys, the thought of the U.S. Congress banning phthalates in children's playthings would have been laughable. But now, in what is being hailed as the first important reform in the 30-year history of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the bill was passed.

My Comment:

While I would prefer that government would not have to get involved, I am happy that these toxins are being banned. Thanks to the Internet, you can buy natural toys that are made out of wood. Sure, these won't be as "cool" as brightly colored plastic toys that have blinking lights and obnoxious sounds, but just think about it... everyone jokes about how little kids like the box more than the present. It's especially important to get natural toys for babies and toddlers when the toys always end up in the kid's mouth.

Backyard Chickens

Ann Arbor approves $20 fee for backyard chickens
Associated Press

ANN ARBOR -- In Ann Arbor, $20 will get you a permit to keep chickens in your backyard.
The Ann Arbor News reports that city council approved the fee Thursday. City council in June had voted to end a long-standing poultry ban by letting people keep up to four hens in their backyards.

No roosters are allowed under the ordinance, since they're too noisy. And slaughtering won't be permitted.

The ordinance went into effect Thursday.

My Comment:

Great news for Ann Arbor. Hopefully more cities will follow suit. Eggs are the number one health food. It would be great to eat fresh eggs for little cost.
